There is a little piece of your rod that is called the guide. The guides are the little loops that start at the handle and decrease in size as they reach the end of the pole. Are they just to hold the fishing line or do they do more?

The trout fishing guide does serve a purpose other than holding your line in place. The size of the loops makes it easier to cast. They cut down on the friction of the line when it is flying out of out of your reel. Another very important function of the guide is to gather the loops that come out of the reel. The line loops can really get in the way of your cast. A well designed rod with the correct guide placements will drastically cut down on the wind resistance during your cast.

For freshwater fishing the guides are going to be much smaller than the saltwater guides. The reason for this has to do with the different casts techniques and fishing conditions. Fly fishing on a river or stream requires a different cast and hence requires smaller guides. As discussed above, friction and resistances plays a really big part in how the rod functions and how the line will come out of out of your reel.

Keep in mind that trout are not only found in fresh water streams, but also in the ocean. Many will change colors and migrate to salt water after the spawning season is over. In the ocean they will not only change color, but also grow in size. The more space a trout has, the larger it will grow. If you plan to fish trout in the ocean, you will need different gear, techniques and bait. Yet one good thing about fishing is you can learn many different techniques , styles and be successful in all of them. This is one sport where you will never get bored. A new challenge is always right around the corner.

Rods come in many different designs which are based on the kind of water you are fishing and the type of fish. It is a science that has been passed down from generation to generation. A good casting method is not only based on technique but also on a well designed fishing rod.

Buying a really good rod and outfitting it with really good expense gear will not make you any better than the guy that attaches a line to the end of his stick and drops it into the lake with a makeshift hook and earthworm. In most instances the guy with the stick will do much better. What is going to make you better than the guy with the stick and better than the new guy with the expensive gear, is knowledge. Fishing knowledge is power over the trout you are trying to reel in.

Knowing about the fish you are trying to hook, a well-engineered fishing pole and guides are going to take you leaps and bounds over the next guy.

Keep up the practice! Soon you will be known as a trout fishing expert.
