Trout fishing is an American past-time that spans generations. Americans love to fish. At the top of the list is trout. It is a fisherman’s favorite fishing target. Trout can be found all over the United States. They can be typically found in lakes, rivers, creeks and streams where the water is cool and clear. Trout are also found around the world both in Asia and in Europe. Many trout species live in both fresh and salt water. Normally salt water trout will return to their fresh water homes to spawn. Trout such as Brook Trout, Bull Trout, Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Steelhead and Arctic Char are all fish that can survive in the ocean and in fresh water lakes, streams and rivers.

Trout can be found all over the world and can also be called different names. Yet no matter the color or name, trout are all part of a specific family of fish called Salmon or Alvelinus Fontinalis. For example the Brook Trout has many different names. It goes by the name of Eastern Brook Trout, Speckled Trout, Squaretail Trout, Coaster Trout or just plain old Coaster. It also has a subspecies named Aurora Trout. All trout mentioned above all come from the same species, yet will show different colors and aspects that separate them from other trout throughout the world.

Trout have a great way of blending into their environments. Take a salt water trout coming back to its fresh water river to spawn. It will look lighter, almost sliver in color. Within a few days it will become darker and start to take on colors that will protect it in its new environment.

Trout are considered to be very bony fish, yet tasty. Their fins are completely without spines with a small fatty deposit near the rear, close to the tail. Trout are in great demand when the fishing season begins. So much in demand that hatcheries are needed to keep up with the need. Most hatcheries are located near lakes and rivers where the demand is the heaviest. This keeps the fish population in balance and guards against over fishing. There are many different techniques to fishing trout. Spinners, flies and other types of lures are used. The most popular technique use is Fly Fishing. Trout are strong and provide a good challenge to any fisherman. The strength of a trout pulling on your line is part of the fun.

There is specific bait that works best on trout. Depending on the kind of trout or species, one type of bait will work better than the others. Choosing bait is a complicated matter. To choose the right bait, takes knowledge of the water, location and type of fish you are going after. The smaller trout will normally feed on bait like nightcrawlers, nymphs , craydaddies, mayflies, stoneflies etc. Craydaddies are the bait of choice for most fishermen. More mature larger trout will feed on small fish. Minnows are good bait for larger fish. In this situation if you are not using live bait, then a spinner will be the appropriate artificial lure. It best resembles a small fish. Larger fish tend to swim in the deeper waters. It is best to use a heaver spinner or weight on your line to sink the bait to the bottom.

Trout fishing is one of the most enjoyable as it provides a good challenge for the fisherman. For the less experienced fishermen, Rainbow trout are a good starting point. They are more aggressive and tend to go for a bite more often than other trout.
