Trout Fishing Net
The trout fishing net is a used to bring a fish out of the water and into a boat or onto the shore. It aids in extracting the fish from its natural environment. It also helps to control the larger more aggressive trout. Match a net to fit the size of the trout, the bigger the trout the bigger net. There is not much more to picking the right size of net.
The Different Types Of Nets
There are basically two types of trout nets found in the stores. There is the regular tear drop shape classic net. This net is great for not only catching lake trout, but also works with streams and rivers. A net like this will be able to handle the weight of up to five pounds.
The second kind of net is made for larger trout or steelheads. It is still tear drop in shape, yet the opening is much bigger and stronger. The handle is extended out for a longer reach. This is perfect for scoping up a big one from the deck of a boat or steep shoreline. This net is for trout of five pounds or larger.
Trout nets are made from very sturdy wood or metal. The more expense, nice looking nets are made of special wood and laminated to resist moisture. The laminate also strengthens the wood. There is really no difference in how these two materials are used. They both perform well. It all depends on the fisherman. Proper maintenance will ensure a lifetime of use for either the wood or metal net.
Maintenance
As you can guess, a metal net will need to be cleaned and conditioned after each use. The drawback from this kind of net is rust, corrosion and bending. Washing the net after each use, proper drying and the occasional conditioning of the metal will provide a lifetime of use.
The wood net does not suffer from corrosion or rust, yet it can suffer from water damage. A wood net that is chipped during a fishing trip can start to weaken. If the wood is not repaired and returned to its original finish within an acceptable timeframe, the damage can become permanent. After each use, it is important to examine the wood for any cracking or chips. Immediately address these weakened areas by cleaning, sanding and reapplying a stain and laminate. Proper maintenance will ensure the beauty of the net can be passed down to the next generation of anglers.
